Nothing says extra leg room quite like staying at home. And we don’t mean in the house, we mean exploring the vast expanse of our glorious country; the rolling English countryside, the wondrous Welsh peaks and the stunning Scottish highlands.  Bypass the stampede to get on the plane, leave the ear plugs behind and forget about the kid kicking your chair all the way to Spain. There’s no need to flee with the world at your feet (well, a very small island), but it’s ours and we love it! Take time to love our homeland this summer, with so much to see and do. Whether you’re caravanning, road tripping, or heading to a festival, make the most of your 2017 journeys with Halfords and our handy guide to having the best break.

Where do I go?

There’s a lot to be said for the humble staycation; no travel insurance, airport queues or language barriers make it an ideal choice for those of us who’d like to see more of this island’s green and pleasant land. The most important question to consider when looking at where to go is what you’re after; are you a cultural maven, keen to soak up history and art? Or are you more interested in relaxing in a quaint pub alongside your favourite four-legged friend?

Whet that cultural appetite in Edinburgh
Few things beat the excitement and adrenaline of a thrumming city, and the UK boasts some of the best cities in the world for tourists. London is the classic, with plenty to whet your cultural appetite, but if you’d like somewhere a bit kinder on the wallet we recommend Edinburgh. Friendly and scenic, Edinburgh has something for everyone. The Scottish National Gallery is home to some stunning pieces by Monet, van Gogh and Rembrandt, whereas if history’s more your thing then you can’t go wrong with a stroll along the Royal Mile, finishing up in Edinburgh Castle. With whiskey, shortbread, and tartan scarves galore, it’s also a fantastic shopping destination.

Take a break in picture-perfect Tenby
If escaping the hustle and bustle is your number one goal, you can’t go far wrong with a stay in picturesque Tenby in West Wales. This quaint harbour town is surrounded by a medieval stone wall and boasts 2.5 miles of sandy beaches for the sun worshippers and sea frolickers alike. It’s also incredibly dog friendly; plenty of pubs allow well-behaved dogs inside, and it’s a good excuse to walk part of the 186 mile-long Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in order to tire them out (and engage in some seal spotting!).

Up those adrenaline levels in the Forest of Dean
There’s no shortage of activities for thrill-seekers in the UK. From zip-wiring over the Eden Project to caving in Cheddar Gorge, there are hundreds of activities to keep your adrenaline levels up. The Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire stands out for its wide variety of activities; with cycling, archery, canoeing and even climbing, there’s something for every age and level of fitness.

Hike, cycle, and kayak your way around the Lake District
Getting back to nature is something we all need to do every once in a while. Few things beat the fresh air and tranquillity of a long weekend in The Lakes. With nearly 2,000 miles of rights of way, you can explore until your heart’s content. The Lake District is the perfect combination of relaxation, history, scenery and adventure and so is a perfect destination for a diverse family or motley group of friends.

What do I take?

Instead of attempting to pile all of your luggage into your car alongside your dog, child seat, and grumpy teenager, why not invest in a roof box? With a range of capacities, sizes, and locking mechanisms they’re a savvy way to transport all your stuff. We’ll fit both your roof bars and roof box for you from £25, and you’ll be off on your way in no time at all.

If man’s best friend is joining you, a dog guard or harness is a good idea for the more rambunctious ones!

Going to be hitting the roads or trails on your trusty two-wheeled machine? If so, you can’t go far wrong with a bike rack. We’ll even fit it for you with prices starting from £15.

Wherever you decide to go and whoever you decide to go with, we hope you have a fantastic time and make memories that last a lifetime.
